Central Office
Staff
Susan Tollefson
Superintendent
It is my pleasure to
serve as the
Superintendent of L’Anse
Area Schools. I look
forward to leading our
school in a positive
direction. My commitment
is to the success of
each of our students.
I was born and
raised in Covington,
Michigan. I attended the
Covington and Sidnaw
elementary schools and
graduated from L’Anse
High School. I earned a
Bachelor’s Degree from
Michigan Technological
University in Materials
Science Engineering
along with Teaching
Certification in
Secondary Science and
Mathematics. I began
teaching at L’Anse Area
Schools in 1995 and have
taught many different
math and science classes
in grades 7-12 over the
years. I earned my
Master’s Degree from
Northern Michigan
University in
Educational
Administration. I also
completed coursework at
Wayne State University
School of Law. I have
served as the National
Honor Society advisor,
middle school
cheerleading coach,
school improvement
chairperson, sophomore
class advisor, 4-H
leader and High School
Figure Skating Team
manager. My hobbies
include watching my
daughters’ sporting
activities, walking,
skiing, fishing and
spending time with my
family.
In the
years that I have been
at L’Anse Area Schools,
it has become evident to
me that we have an
outstanding school
faculty and staff and a
community that takes
pride in their town and
school. I am fortunate
to have the opportunity
to continue my career in
this community that has
been my lifelong home. I
believe that our
students are second to
none and I am committed
to assuring that our
school provides a
variety of opportunities
that meet the diverse
needs of our students.
The best part of my
career in education has
been when former
students return to our
school and express
appreciation for the
education they received
here or the memories
that were made here.
Theresa Bianco
Business
Manager
Having previously served
as the Business Manager
at L'Anse Area Schools
from 2018 to 2022, I am
thrilled to return to
this familiar role. My
previous experience
besides being the
Business Manager
includes HR Director at
KBOCC, Accounting
Assistant at MI DNR, and
Billing Clerk for
Bayview Family Practice.
Beyond my
professional endeavors,
I cherish the simple
joys of life. You'll
often find me casting a
line while fishing in
our beautiful Lake
Superior, firing up the
sauna, nurturing my
garden, or embarking on
adventures with my
husband, children and
grandchildren. These
moments not only bring
me happiness but also
keep me connected to
what truly matters.
Returning to L'Anse
Area Schools isn't just
about a job for me; it's
about the team I work
with in Central Office,
the friendships,
contributing to the
growth and success of
our community. I am
excited to once again
collaborate with
dedicated board members
to ensure our school
continues to thrive.
Joanne Hochstein
Administrative
Assistant
Having graduated from
L’Anse Area Schools, I
have enjoyed my role as
Administrative Assistant
since 2013. Prior to
this role, I was
employed with BHK Child
Development for 19 years
and established many
friendships while
helping parents and
children.
Outside
of work, you will find
me in the kitchen,
reading or spending time
with my family. I also
enjoy the 4 seasons we
are so fortunate to
have. Working in
Central office has had a
great impact on me and I
look forward to the new
challenges every day!
April Niemi
Accounting Clerk
I am a 1998 graduate
from L’Anse Area
Schools. For 8 years I
worked in Food Service
where I enjoyed seeing
the students on a daily
basis. Recently I have
transferred into the
role of Accounting Clerk
and although I do not
have this daily contact
with students, this new
role has been a great
change in my career.
Aside from work, my
children keep me busy
with extracurricular
activities. Family time
is very important to me,
whether it’s on a beach
or hiking through the
woods. When I have free
time, I enjoy picking
beach glass or being in
the garden. My priority
is being a devoted
mother and wife.
Working in Central
Office has been a great
opportunity.
